More than $305,000 was awarded in student scholarships on September 11 during the annual Mount Carmel College of Nursing Scholarship Dinner. Approximately100 students were in attendance to accept scholarships and meet this year’s donors. Alumni from the classes of 1957,1963,1964 and 1975 funded seven of the scholarships awarded.
“I am so happy to see so many of our classes engaging in the future of our students and helping them obtain their education this year,” said Michele Born, Coordinator of Alumni Relations, “I hope to see it continue in years to come.”
“We pride ourselves each and every day by rising up to meet the challenges of an ever-changing healthcare environment – by recruiting, educating and graduating the best and brightest students,” said Mary Cannon, Director of Financial Aid, while addressing attendees of the dinner on Thursday. “One way that we ensure strong graduates is to provide support, academic and financial, to the students.”
It’s an important lynchpin to carry on the legacy of transforming nursing professionals in the next steps of their careers, notable during Mount Carmel 111th anniversary this year. “It’s a legacy that started with a tiny band of Holy Cross Sisters who had the vision to start a nursing school,” said Jan Burkey, Director of Development at the College. “Now it’s a solid foundation of nursing education that lives on today.” Burkey attributed this success to the donors, students, faculty and staff, who are a “vital part of continuing a rich legacy,” she said.
