I have been convicted of a misdemeanor (or felony). Am I still able to apply to Mount Carmel and would I be able to obtain a license as a registered nurse?

Depending on the severity of the misdemeanor or felony charge the college may be able to accept you as a student and you may be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. Any student who indicates on their application that they have been convicted will have the opportunity to speak with the College Compliance Officer about the matter in order to discern whether admission and becoming a nurse is possible.

What if my application and additional materials arrive after the deadline?

We will accept applications and materials postmarked on or before the application deadline. If they arrive after the deadline and are not postmarked appropriately, they will be considered late.

When does the program start?

The program starts twice a year in January and May. Students must have all the requirements complete by then (no exceptions).

Is there any way to have my transcripts reviewed by the evaluator before I apply?

Yes. You must complete a preliminary transcript evaluation form available for download from our website.

I attended an international college/university. Can Mount Carmel evaluate that transcript for transfer credit?

Unfortunately, MCCN does not directly evaluate international college/university transcripts. They must first be evaluated by World Education Services (WES). You must request that the institution send WES a transcript. WES will evaluate and then send us the results. In turn we will determine if any of the courses will be taken.

Is there any possibility I may have to take course work over?

No longer time frame on sciences or any courses.

What is the TOEFL and why must I take it?

The TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and you must take this exam if English is not your native language.

I have taken ESL classes. Will you accept those instead?

No. You must take the TOEFL.

I have lived in the U.S. for several years now and do speak English. Do I still have to take the TOEFL?

This is at the discretion of the Director of Admissions. Please contact the Admissions Office if this is the case.

I am a non-immigrant international student in the United States. Am I eligible?

Mount Carmel College of Nursing is not an I-20 granting institution. We can accept international students only if they are Permanent Residence or do not require I-20 documentation. Please check the status of your visa.

What must my admission essay be about and how long must it be?

Essay topics vary and are listed in the application. Please select one and write a maximum of 300 words.

My essay is over 300 words. I’ve tried to shorten it, but I’m still over. Is that ok?

Yes.

What is this alternate essay?

The alternate essay is an option for those to write about and explain how a personal hardship (e.g. death of a family member, serious illness, learning disability, etc.) may have inhibited them from performing as well as they could have in school.

What should my resume include?

Include any of the following:

  • Work experience
  • Community service
  • Honors/awards
  • Leadership roles held
  • Hobbies/interests
  • Clubs/organizations you are a member of

Will I need to be CPR certified? If so what classes will you accept?

The college and all health systems where the students will be completing clinical require the American Heart Association Basic Life support.

  • We do not accept the Red Cross or any outside training.
  • CPR MUST be current at all times or you cannot attend clinical.
  • All students will have the opportunity to complete the needed CPR at the college.

Are there any health requirements prior to enrolling in MCCN?

Yes. Once you confirm your attendance the Admissions Office will mail you documentation asking for medical history and immunizations.

Can I work while enrolled in the program?

Students are welcome to work should they choose. Employment opportunities are available within the college as well as the Mount Carmel Health System. Please understand we cannot guarantee each student employment.

Are there any benefits that come with working in the Mount Carmel Health System while going to school?

Yes, there are several benefits which include:

  • Paid position

Will there be an Orientation for student accepted to the program?

Yes. Information about orientation will be given by the Registrar’s Office.

When do classes meet?

Class, lab and clinical times will vary depending on clinical and lab availability.

Will I have classes in the evening or on weekends?

Students need to maintain flexibility in scheduling. Evening or weekend clinicals and labs could be scheduled.

Who teaches the courses and where?

Mount Carmel College of Nursing faculty teach all theory courses. Clinical experiences are planned for one of the three Columbus hospitals in the Mount Carmel Health System or local healthcare facilities. Clinical activities have oversight by College faculty, sometimes with involvement of nurse preceptors.

When are the breaks in the year?

There are several breaks and days off during the academic year. Students will have a Fall Break in October, a Winter Break in March, and a Summer Break in May. Students will have time off for:

  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day.
  • Students taking Summer classes will have Independence Day off.

What other type of equipment will I need to purchase?

Students will need to purchase a lab coat, student uniform, College of Nursing uniform patch, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, calipers, penlight and wrist watch. Information regarding where to purchase these items will be provided to students after admission to the program.

Are there other program requirements in addition to the courses?

All students must complete 20 clock hours of community service (outside of class hours) in order to meet graduation requirements.

How many credit hours are required to graduate?

Students must earn 120 credit hours to graduate (includes transfer credit and credit earned at MCCN).

Upon completion of the program what degree will I earn?

Upon completion of the curriculum, Mount Carmel College of Nursing will confer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

When I graduate am I then a Registered Nurse (RN)?

No. Graduates must pass the licensing exam to become an RN. Oversight for this exam is through the Ohio Board of Nursing. We will provide graduates with details about scheduling the NCLEX-RN exam.
