Avondale Christmas Present Community Service Project

The Avondale Christmas tree is now up in the lobby of Marian Hall! Below are the instructions for this annual tradition.

1. Choose a green ornament from the tree.

2. On the corresponding red ornament, write the student’s name, the classroom number and your name and return to the tree.

3. Take the green ornament with you to shop for the student.

4. Return the gift and green ornament by noon on Nov. 21 to the Christmas tree.

5. Join the Office of Student Life beginning Wednesday, Nov. 20, to help wrap the gifts.

6. Join your fellow Nightingales on Friday, Dec. 13, at 9:30 a.m. to load cars and deliver gifts to the Avondale students.

Join MCCN Campus Ministry for the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service

Now in its sixth year, the Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be held on Monday, Nov. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. in the College Lounge. Organized by Ellen O’Shaughnessy, DMin, director of Campus Ministry, and Campus Ministry students, the event will feature individuals and students representing Episcopalian, Jewish, Muslim, Roman Catholic and United Methodist traditions, who will reflect on what their faith means to them.

Please consider bringing an item – or items – to the service to be donated to the homeless and residential working poor of Franklinton. Items requested are warm blankets, socks, hats, gloves, coats, tents and AAA batteries. Your gifts will then be distributed to those in need by Mount Carmel’s Street Medicine program. Kristina Kowatsch-Beyer, Mount Carmel Outreach clinical manager, will receive the offerings.

RN Referral Program

Between now and Feb. 29, 2020, we’re pleased to offer an exciting new colleague referral program to encourage our most valued assets — our colleagues — to assist in bringing new nurses to Mount Carmel.

We’re looking for full-time, part-time and casual bedside RNs with at least one year of acute care experience to join our teams at MCE, MCGC, MCNA, MCSA and our FlexChoice program. Referring colleagues will be eligible for referral bonuses of $5,000, $2,500 or $1,000 per hire, depending on the type of placement that is made (outlined below):

Full-time, benefited bedside RN: $5,000
Part-time (0.40-0.80 FTE) bedside RN: $2,500
Casual bedside RN: $1,000

MANDATORY Flu Vaccinations – Nov. 30 Deadline

Mandatory flu shots are required to be completed and documented by Saturday, Nov. 30. You may receive the flu vaccine from a source outside of work (e.g., retail clinic provider, physician’s office) and provide documentation, including date and provider’s signature/information, to Employee Health by Nov. 30. MLK Essay Contest 2020

Sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion

In “On Being a Good Neighbor,” one of 16 sermons included in the book entitled, A Gift of Love: Sermons from the Strength to Love and Other Preachings, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recounts the story of the Good Samaritan and the responses from the priest, the Levite and the Samaritan to the wounded man on the Jericho Road. In this essay, the Rev. King highlights a litany of questions one grapples with in order to develop an understanding of what it means to be a “good neighbor.” Please share your definition of a “good neighbor” and how you would address the potential consequences of being a “good neighbor.”

Deadline: Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 by 5 p.m.

3—5 pages. Double-spaced, Times, 12 pt. font. APA format.

2020 Nurses Day at the Statehouse

The next Nurses Day at the Statehouse is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 11, 2020. More than 200 nurses and nursing students from around the state of Ohio will gather to learn more about legislative issues and visit legislators. Fundraiser for Hope Hollow

MCCN-Lancaster junior, Grace Gundelfinger organized a 5k fundraiser for Hope Hollow, a cancer support service. Members of SNAM-Lancaster volunteered and donated items for a raffle prize. The event, which raised over $2,800 for Hope Hollow, was attended by many faculty members and students.

Achievements: Congratulations to Students!

Senior students, Lynna Knapp and Nicole Fridel, identified a potential serious complication in a patient during NUR 406 clinicals and notified their instructor and patient’s nurses, who then cared for the patient based on the students’ assessment. Great job, Nightingales!

From the Office of Safety and Security: Holiday Safety Tips

We want to remind our campus community to prioritize safety during the holiday season. AAA projects that 48.7 million Americans will travel this holiday season, so please take precautions on roadways and utilize the below tips before you depart:

Lock your doors, windows and close your curtains or blinds
Disconnect electrical devices that are not being used
Leave a light and a TV or radio on in your apartment.
Record serial numbers of your devices
Do not leave money, credit cards or ID in your home/room
Take all your valuables with you.
Do not leave valuables in your vehicle and please lock it.

For those celebrating on campus this year, our Safety and Security team will have a visible presence on Campus, so if you see something, say something. Report suspicious behavior to Campus Security by calling 614.896.1489 (on campus). Off campus, you can call Columbus Police at 614.645.4545, or – in an emergency – 9-1-1.

Please celebrate responsibly, and if you plan to drink alcohol, appoint a designated driver or companion and value the decisions of those who do not wish to drink. If you see a friend who has had too much to drink, please do not let them drive or let them leave with a stranger.

Wherever you may be, as always, we encourage you to use sidewalks and crosswalks and avoid walking alone, especially at night. Our security team is here to help, always wear your Mount Carmel badge when on campus; it is for your safety.

The safety of our campus is our number one priority, and we hope that everyone has a safe and happy Holiday Season.
