MCCN Represented in the Ohio Student Nurses Association!

Congratulations to the MCCN students who were appointed to leadership positions in the Ohio Student Nurses Association Board of Directors. Taylor Pellam, MCCN senior, will serve as president; Halle Turner, MCCN senior, will serve as vice president; and Kali Clark, MCCN senior, was elected to the Office of Public Health and will serve as the Global Relations director.

MCCN also won the Brain Bowl at the recent Ohio Student Nurses Association Convention held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Capital University. Congratulations, Nightingales!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the Office of Student Life and the Compliance Office are co-sponsoring a Lunch and Learn for students on Thursday, Oct. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in the College Gym. Chelsey Getz, training coordinator for The Center for Safety and Healing, will give a presentation on “Dating in a Digital World.” Lunch will be provided and door prizes will be awarded! Fall Wellness Festival

The Annual Fall Wellness Festival has been expanded to a Fall Wellness Week to ensure all students are able to take part in the activities. Fall Wellness Week will take place in the Marian Hall Lounge and Gym Oct. 28 through Oct. 31.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service

As Campus Ministry prepares for the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 18, noon in the Lounge, please consider bringing an item – or more – to the service to be donated to the homeless and residential working poor of Franklinton. Items requested are warm blankets, socks, hats, gloves, coats, tents and AAA batteries (for heaters for those who choose to live outside in tents). Your gifts will then be distributed to those in need by Mount Carmel’s Street Medicine program. Kristina Kowatsch-Beyer, Mount Carmel Outreach clinical manager, will receive the offerings. Regarding the offerings from the 2018 Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service, Kristina wrote, “Please share with the MCCN staff and students that their gracious donations of warm winter gear were very much appreciated over these past couple of days. Though we have been sharing these wonderful items with our homeless friends since Thanksgiving, they have never been more grateful than over the past few days when temperatures have remained at or below freezing. It seems crazy that someone could survive in these temperatures, but despite the community’s best efforts, some people still choose to stay outside. The donated blankets and warm gear have helped people survive. Thank you for this kindness.”

Ann E. Schiele Presidential Endowment Fund Recipients Attend Workshop

Thanks to the generosity of the Dr. Ann E. Schiele Presidential Endowment Fund, Roxanne Oliver, DNR, RN, APN, FNP-BC, director of the Graduate Programs, and Lindsey Luther, MS, APRN, FNP-C, assistant instructor, accompanied two Family Nurse Practitioner students, Rebecca Fares and Kelly Saltsman, to New York City. The group attended an intensive interdisciplinary immersion workshop in health care communication presented by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at SUNY. Throughout the workshop, they participated in improvisation and communication activities designed to help health care providers become better listeners, leaders, and communicators in a variety of health care settings. They also enjoyed a surprise visit from Alan Alda himself (see picture), who described the impact that this training can have on health care providers and its importance to our work as scientific experts and patient advocates. Upon return, the students and faculty hope to share the communication strategies they've learned with faculty and students alike.
