MCCN Nursing Education programs return
Mount Carmel College of Nursing will soon enroll new students in our Master of Science program in Nursing Education, as well as our Post-Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education.
MCCN’s Nursing Education track, offered online, prepares the professional nurse to enter the academic classroom and institutional staff development department as faculty to educate the next generation of nurses or to take on staff development responsibilities in a healthcare setting. This advanced professional will apply relevant research in nursing education and understand the ethical and legal issues associated with the role of an educator in nursing. The program will conclude with a practicum learning experience.
The certificate program is approximately three semesters in length, depending on the candidate's transfer credit. However, all students must successfully complete specialty track coursework, complete 150 educational practicum hours and maintain a 3.0 GPA to earn a program certificate.
New students will begin in spring and fall semesters. The application deadline for spring will be November 30, 2024. Interested in this program? Inquiries should be sent to: admissions@mccn.edu.
Annual Scholarship and Donor Recognition Dinner connects students and their benefactors
Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN) hosted its annual Scholarship and Donor Recognition Dinner on September 19, 2024. At the event, 217 scholarships were provided. The total awarded was $545,175, with $488,175 coming directly through the Mount Carmel Foundation.
Allison Dellinger, a second-year student at MCCN, shared her gratitude for the scholarship money she received. “Without help, I knew I would not be able to afford college, but I knew I did not want to live the life my parents did, where they struggled to make ends meet working jobs that they were not happy with, and overall being sad. While I understand that most college students leave with a lot of debt, I fear that debt will drown me before I even get a chance to live my life. To those who give the scholarships, you are making a little girl's dream come true. Living for the future is scary, but I know right now that I am okay and will be okay thanks to all of you here today. I never thought this would be my life, but the younger me would be standing here smiling that we made it this far. I know this is only the beginning, but I truly cannot wait for the years to come. So, thank you for allowing me the chance to better not only my life but those in my community as well.”

MCCN volunteer program launching in January
Mount Carmel Health System is expanding its volunteer program to include opportunities at MCCN. Whether it’s greeting students on special welcome days, assisting with events and activities, stocking the skills lab, or helping in the library, there will be great ways to get involved at the College.
The new volunteer opportunities will begin in January 2025, and applications to participate are now being accepted. All volunteers are required to complete a TB test and a background check, provide copies of current flu and COVID vaccines (or complete declinations), and participate in new volunteer orientation and training. The majority of volunteer shifts are four hours long and fall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Apply here to volunteer at MCCN.

Professional Highlights
The highlight of my nursing profession has been serving as a forensic nurse and caring for victims of sexual and domestic violence, as well as human trafficking victims. Practicing as a sexual assault nurse examiner was the most rewarding nursing role of my career.

When did you first feel the call to be a nurse?
I attended a Mount Carmel open house and felt the love and compassion as soon as I walked in the front doors. I was inspired to pursue nursing that day and never looked back!
What television show do you have to DVR every week?
I'm a big Yellowstone fan and love anything created by Taylor Sheridan.
What is your favorite memory of Mount Carmel?
I almost dropped out my sophomore year due to financial constraints. I confided in Sister Kathy after a Campus Ministry meeting and she quietly went to Dr. Schiele. The next day Dr. Schiele called me to her office and I was so scared because I didn't know the reason. She handed me a check to cover my electric bill and told me, "This is not a loan. You don't ever have to pay this back. But you have to promise me you won't quit school." I'll never forget her caring generosity and how she helped me. That gesture shaped me as a nurse.
What advice would you like to share with other nurses as they move from student to alumni of Mount Carmel?
Take care of your physical and mental health throughout your nursing career. Always recenter yourself back to that compassionate moral compass you learned at Mount Carmel. And pay it forward as an alumnus of the best nursing school in the land!
