Choose Ohio First

Program to award scholarships to future advanced degree nursing leaders.

Mount Carmel College of Nursing is excited to announce that they have been awarded $720,000 to award scholarships to new, incoming graduate students through the funding by the Ohio Department of Higher Education as part of the department’s Choose Ohio First program. That funding will be matched through the generosity of the Mount Carmel Foundation bringing the total awarded dollars to over $1.4 million.

Dr. Jami Nininger, Interim Academic Dean, and Dr. Roxanne Oliver, Director of Graduate and DNP Programs, share: “We are honored to be receiving this funding to further our mission of educating professional compassionate nursing leaders who promote health within their communities. This funding will allow Mount Carmel College of Nursing to continue to offer our innovative and excellent nursing graduate programs at an affordable cost. The Choose Ohio First funds are designed to connect Ohio college students with in-state STEM programs and encouraging employment at local organizations after graduation.”

According to the Ohio Department of Higher Education, “Choose Ohio First is an initiative promoted and administered by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to bolster support for the next generation of Ohio STEM scholars and industry leaders.”

To be eligible for funding, students must:

  • Be a new graduate student entering Mount Carmel College of Nursing
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, as well as an Ohio resident
  • Have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Have a BSN grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Commitment to the ChooseOhioFirst program requirements

Mount Carmel College of Nursing looks to begin awarding this funding for students enrolling in the upcoming fall 2023 semester. Scholarships will be awarded to students that meet the selected criteria and who have demonstrated financial need and are enrolled full-time in a graduate program at MCCN. The objective of the scholarship program is to increase the number of advanced degree nurses throughout the workforce by supporting students through their financial and career goals. The ODHE Choose Ohio First fund supports over 6,000 students statewide at over 50 colleges and universities.
