FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Registration Underway for 2010 Camp Mount Carmel: Healthcare Adventures
Popular Mount Carmel College of Nursing summer camp designed for high school students interested in health careers
Columbus, Ohio…Stethoscopes, surgery and exploration will be on the activity board for central Ohio high school students participating in the highly successful Camp Mount Carmel: Healthcare Adventures. Sponsored by Mount Carmel College of Nursing, the camp will be held the week of June 14-17, 2010 for high school students entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. The camps will be held during those weeks from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The first of its kind in Ohio and now entering its ninth year, Camp Mount Carmel is a day camp designed for high school students who have expressed interest in healthcare professions. The camp offers students a platform to experience the many facets of healthcare careers---all in a week filled with a variety of activities and programs.
The week will include:
- A visit to COSI for a live video surgical procedure
- Exciting tours of hospital areas, including the ER
- Shadowing/ mentoring tracks with various healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians (which will be a collaboration with The Ohio State University College of Medicine), pharmacists, dieticians, radiology staff and respiratory, physical and occupational therapists
- A "working" visit to community outreach centers
- A nursing skills lab
- Surgical Insights at Mount Carmel New Albany Hospital and Mount Carmel St. Ann’s
Faced with a critical shortage of healthcare workers across the United States as well as in central Ohio, Camp Mount Carmel can help students gain greater insight into this fast-paced, high demand field. By stimulating interest early, a student may want to pursue a healthcare career in the future. “The camp is designed to provide a first-person experience to increase awareness and interest about the numerous career opportunities available in healthcare,” said Ann Schiele PhD, RN, President and Dean, Mount Carmel College of Nursing. “The high school years are a perfect time to begin this process.”
Mount Carmel College of Nursing student nurses will serve as camp counselors for the event. Cost of the camp is $225 ($200 for Mount Carmel employee family members) and includes all field trip fees, transportation to field trips, t-shirts, snacks and meals. For more information about Camp Mount Carmel: Healthcare Adventures or to register by phone call 614-234-LIFE or visit the Mount Carmel College of Nursing website at www.mccn.edu where the registration form is posted. Space is limited and students will be registered on a first registered, first admitted basis.
