MCCN Second Degree Accelerated Program Student
What inspired you to become a nurse?
Most of my inspiration comes from personal experience and a passion for helping others when they need it most. Before I decided to pursue nursing, I was a medical assistant at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Center for Family Safety and Healing, and I was hooked almost immediately. However, due to my scope of practice as a medical assistant, I could only help with a few clinical skills and procedures. I knew I wanted to provide more for my patients and that nursing would allow me to do just that. Being able to provide care and be a part of someone's healing process is extremely rewarding, and I am happy to be a part of it.
What is the best thing about Mount Carmel College of Nursing?
The best thing about Mount Carmel is how much they invest and believe in their students. When I applied to nursing programs, Mount Carmel reached out to me first, even before I submitted my application, which told me a lot about their program. They make it easy for students to find their way and will help them get to wherever they want to go.
What are your goals for your nursing career?
I want to work at the bedside for a few years to gain experience and then pursue the master's degree program in acute care at Mount Carmel. After finishing my master's program, I want to continue into either neonatal intensive care or neurocritical care.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Take your time reaching your final destination, enjoy the journey, and appreciate the little things. You have everything you need and are precisely where you need to be. You also have something someone else needs, even if you don't know it yet. Something simple and generally taken for granted may mean everything to someone else. That said, always keep an open mind and remember that everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in nursing?
Absolutely go for it! The journey can be a little intimidating and overwhelming at times, but anything difficult in life is worth it. Nursing is truly one of the most rewarding fields, and choosing to go into nursing is one of the best decisions that I have ever made.
