As part of our ongoing series to profile faculty, staff and student representatives, this month we feature Darrell Spurlock, Jr., PhD, RN, NEA-BC, Associate Professor at MCCN.

Hometown: Grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. I’m a resident of Grove City, Ohio now.

Alma Mater: West Virginia University

I can’t live without… bacon. Plain and simple.

If I could spend the day with one person it would be… Pope Francis

If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… Rome, to meet Pope Francis, of course!

When I have down time, I… do not come near a computer.

My favorite movie is… Amazing Grace (2006) - the story of William Wilberforce and the abolition of the British slave trade at the turn of the 19th century.

The quote I tend to live by is… “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle,” Rev. John Watson, 1850-1907.

I chose Mount Carmel because… of the mission and core values: respect, compassion, excellence, care for the poor and underserved, and social justice.

I love being a nurse educator because… students are the future of our profession. I am honored to have a role in shaping that future.

One thing I am looking forward to this year is… publishing the results of two important research projects I've worked on for over two years.

One thing you may not know about me is… despite my affinity for statistics, math was my least favorite subject in school. I was never motivated by the abstract way math was taught from elementary through high school. That changed when I took statistics in college and saw how data can inform almost everything we do.
