Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the 25th Annual Siegel Lecture, set for Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Siegel Center at Mount Carmel East. This year’s speaker, Ashley K. Fernandes, MD, PhD, FAAP, associate director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities at The Ohio State University College Medicine and associate professor of pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will focus on “Courage in Medicine.”
Ethical issues in healthcare are common. Nearly every decision that’s made has ethical implications – for patients, for providers, and for healthcare leaders. Fernandes will present post-modern conceptions and principles of bioethics, critique cognitive relativism, moral relativism, and subjectivism, and establish an authentic philosophical anthropology for medicine.
Continuing education credits will be offered for physicians, nurses and social workers. This program is made possible through the Mount Carmel Foundation.
The Bruce E. Siegel Memorial Lecture recognizes the membership of Bruce E. Siegel, MD, on the first Ethics Study Group, established at Mount Carmel East in 1985. Siegel was a beloved physician, one of the first members of the Medical Staff at Mount Carmel East, who believed that an individual’s understanding of his or her health problems, as well as knowledge of what it takes to stay healthy, are critical factors in the healing process. The Bruce E. Siegel Center for Health Education, which opened in his honor in January 1994 at Mount Carmel East, embodies these beliefs.
The Ethics Study Groups at both Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel East, of which Siegel was a member, became Medical Staff committees in 1987 with representation from physicians and non-physicians. Today, these groups, along with the Ethics Committee at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, continue to have interdisciplinary representation. Ethics initiatives, such as education, 24-hour consultation services, policy and position statement development and community forums, have evolved from these Ethics Advisory Committees. Consistent with Mount Carmel’s Mission, these committees are forums that serve as a resource to healthcare providers.
