A Career in Nursing

Nursing is the nation’s largest healthcare profession and one of the largest segments of the U.S. workforce. Employment is expected to grow as much as 15% over the next ten years, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Registered nurses are in high demand in both acute care and community settings. Nursing is among the highest-paying large occupations and employers are expressing a strong preference for nurses with bachelor’s degrees.

  • The federal government projects more than 200,000 new registered nurse positions will be created each year from 2016-2026.
  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RN salaries average $70,000 per year and nurse practitioner salaries average $110,000 annually.
  • Most nurses today enter practice with a baccalaureate degree. In 2018, 17.1% of the nation’s registered nurses held a master’s degree; 1.9% held a doctoral degree.
  • There are more than 4 million registered nurses in the United States.
  • More medical care is being delivered in outpatient settings, driven by the desire to control health care costs and the availability of more effective treatment and technology.
  • More men and minorities are becoming nurses, bringing increased diversity to the profession.
  • Nurses with higher education levels are better prepared to meet the fast-moving and frequently challenging nature of health care today.
  • Roughly one-third of the current nursing workforce will hit retirement age by 2031, potentially creating a shortfall of 1 million nurses.
  • Nearly 60% of BSN nursing students have job offers when they graduate; nearly 90% are employed within four months of graduation.
  • In 2014, 55% of the RN workforce held a bachelor’s or higher degree. In 2020, 80% will have earned a bachelor’s or higher degree.
